Curacao Carnival 2027: What Is Confirmed, What Is Not, and How to See It

The quick answer

Curacao Carnival 2027 builds toward Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 10, 2027. As of August 2026 the organizing foundation FDKK had not yet published official 2027 parade dates. If the long-running pattern holds, the Gran Marcha (Grand Parade) would land on Sunday February 7 and the Farewell March on Tuesday evening February 9, 2027, but those are pattern-based estimates, not confirmed dates. The parades run through Otrobanda in Willemstad and viewing along the route is free.

Carnival is the biggest recurring cultural event on Curacao, a season that stretches over weeks rather than a single weekend, ending in two big Willemstad parades just before Ash Wednesday. If you are thinking about building a 2027 trip around it, here is what is actually confirmed, what is only pattern, and how the season works on the ground, without the invented precision some event sites publish.

The one date that is fixed

Carnival's timing follows the church calendar, and the anchor is Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 10, 2027. Everything in the season counts backward from that day: the final parades land in the days immediately before it, and the season's music competitions and jump-ups fill the weeks leading up.

The honest status of the official 2027 dates

As of this writing in August 2026, the organizing foundation FDKK (Fundashon Desaroyo Karnaval Korsou) had not yet published the official 2027 parade calendar. The organizer's own site still showed prior-season information when we checked, and the most recent official news is that the events company Beehives won the tender to organize the 2026 and 2027 editions, per Curacao Chronicle reporting from August 2025.

Be careful with third-party event sites that already list specific "Curacao Carnival 2027" dates. The ones we checked were computed placeholder pages rather than sourced announcements, and at least one listed a date and weekday combination that does not exist in the 2027 calendar. Until FDKK publishes the program, treat every specific 2027 parade date you see online as a guess. We will update this page when the official calendar lands, and our events page tracks the confirmed-versus-expected status the same way.

The traditional rhythm of the season

What we can describe with confidence is the pattern, because it repeats. Using the 2026 season's official program as the reference:

The season opens in early January. In 2026 the official opening fell on January 3, with neighborhood warm-up events even earlier. The Tumba Festival, the days-long music competition that crowns the song the whole island marches to, ran January 26 to 30 in 2026, a couple of weeks before the parades.

The children's parade traditionally runs on the Sunday one week before the main event. The Gran Marcha, the Grand Parade and the season's centerpiece, lands on the final Sunday before Ash Wednesday. The Marcha di Despedida, the Farewell March, closes the season on Tuesday evening, a parade of lights that traditionally ends with the burning of the Momo figure at midnight before Ash Wednesday.

Applied to 2027, that pattern would put the Gran Marcha on Sunday February 7 and the Farewell March on Tuesday February 9. To be clear one more time: those are estimates from the pattern, not published dates.

One more January tradition worth knowing even though it is not an official Carnival event: Fuik Dag, on the first Sunday of January, when hundreds of boats raft up in Fuik Bay on the island's southeast coast for a day-long party on the water. The bay is reachable only by sea, so joining means a boat, and it is an informal tradition rather than an organized festival.

Where the parades run and how to watch

The main parades run through Willemstad, centered on Otrobanda: the route in recent seasons has run along Schottegatweg West and Weg naar Welgelegen, then Roodeweg and Breedestraat, ending near Brion Square by the pontoon bridge. Watching from the route is free. Locals stake out spots well in advance, often marking them with tape and chairs, and paid grandstand seating from private vendors typically goes on sale in the final weeks before the parades.

A smaller parade also traditionally runs in Barber, in the Bandabou countryside west of town, on a separate day from the Willemstad marches. Around any parade day, expect road closures and slow traffic in and around the route, so plan to park well away and walk, or base yourself within walking distance.

Planning a trip around it

Carnival lands inside Curacao's December-to-April high season, so the usual peak-season advice applies with extra force: book the room early, especially anything in walking distance of Otrobanda or Punda. Our where to stay guide covers the neighborhoods, and the hotels page is where we would start comparing.

Two honest practical notes. First, petty theft ticks up seasonally around Carnival, per the Government of Canada's travel guidance, so the standard precautions in our safety guide matter a little more in these weeks: nothing visible in a parked car, valuables off the street. Second, Carnival does not cancel the rest of the island. The beaches, the west end and the food scene run as normal, so a Carnival trip can still follow most of our 7-day itinerary, with the parade days swapped in.

If your dates are flexible and Carnival is not the draw, the season around it is simply Curacao's busy, dry, pleasant peak; our best time to visit guide lays out that whole calendar honestly.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Curacao Carnival 2027?

The season ends just before Ash Wednesday, which falls on February 10, 2027. If the traditional pattern holds, the Gran Marcha (Grand Parade) would fall on Sunday February 7 and the Farewell March on Tuesday evening February 9, 2027, but the organizing foundation FDKK had not published official 2027 dates as of August 2026, so treat those as estimates.

Are the official Curacao Carnival 2027 dates published yet?

No, not as of August 2026. Third-party sites listing specific 2027 dates are computed placeholders, not announcements. Check the organizer FDKK's official channels closer to the season, or our events page, which tracks confirmed versus expected dates.

Where does the Gran Marcha run?

Through Willemstad, centered on Otrobanda. Recent routes ran along Schottegatweg West and Weg naar Welgelegen, then Roodeweg and Breedestraat, ending near Brion Square by the pontoon bridge. A smaller parade also traditionally runs in Barber, west of town.

Is watching Curacao Carnival free?

Yes, watching from the parade route is free, and locals stake out spots early. Paid grandstand seats from private vendors typically go on sale in the final weeks before the parades.

What is the Tumba Festival?

A days-long music competition, traditionally held a couple of weeks before the parades, that crowns the Tumba song the island marches to that season. In 2026 it ran January 26 to 30.

Is Curacao safe during Carnival season?

Curacao carries the US State Department's lowest advisory tier, and Carnival does not change that. The Government of Canada's guidance does note petty theft rises around Carnival season, so keep valuables out of sight and out of parked cars, the same standard precautions as the rest of the year, applied a little more consistently.
