Almost every month-by-month Caribbean guide files Curacao's December under "rainy season, book elsewhere". That is lazy, and the island's own meteorological service has published the numbers that disprove it for years.
December on Curacao averages 86.4 millimetres of rain. November averages 141.0. The wettest month here is not December, it is the one before it, and the whole year only totals 570 millimetres, which is a semi-arid figure by any standard. Those are the Meteorological Department Curacao's official 30-year normals for 1991 to 2020, measured at the Hato airport station.

The line that reframes everything is the third from the bottom but one: 52.2 hours with rainfall. December has 744 hours in it. Rain falls during about seven percent of them.
Set against that, 254 hours of sunshine works out at roughly eight and a quarter hours a day. Cloud cover averages 44 percent, and the department's own climate summary describes Curacao's skies as usually mostly clear to partly cloudy.

Why nine or ten rainy days does not mean nine or ten ruined days
Two facts do the work here.
The first is when it rains. The Meteorological Department's climate summary explains that Curacao's rainfall pattern runs opposite to the typical tropical regime: because of the sea and land breeze effect, most precipitation is suppressed during the day and tends to occur late at night or in the early morning. A December rain day on this island is very often a rain night.
The second is how long it rains. Divide 52.2 hours of rainfall across 9.8 rain days and the average wet day carries a little over five hours of rain spread across it, most of it while you are asleep. That is not a washout. It is a shower before breakfast and a wet road at midnight.
The department is also clear about why the island is dry at all. Curacao sits in the Southern Caribbean Dry Zone, classified semi-arid, and the cold-water upwelling along the nearby Venezuelan coast plus atmospheric subsidence actively suppress cloud development. The cactus-scrub landscape is not decorative. It is the climate showing its work.
The El Nino wrinkle for December 2026 specifically
This is the part no other December guide is carrying, and it is worth stating carefully because it is a forecast rather than a fact.
The Meteorological Department's climate summary states plainly that on Curacao "A Nino will suppress the main rain season (Oct-Jan) while La Nina will enhance this rain season."
NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, in its ENSO Diagnostic Discussion dated 13 August 2026, has El Nino under an advisory and strengthening, with a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter of 2026 to 2027. For the October to December 2026 season it puts a 69 percent chance on an event exceeding the strength of any El Nino since 1950.
Put the two together and December 2026 has a better than usual chance of running drier than the 86.4 millimetre normal. We are not going to oversell it. The CPC's own wording is that with an event of this magnitude the chances of experiencing impacts consistent with El Nino are larger, "but they are not guaranteed", and a seasonal signal tells you nothing about the afternoon you happen to be on the beach. Take it as a reason not to cancel over a rain forecast, not as a promise.

Temperature, sea and wind
Curacao barely has seasons in the temperature sense. Across the whole year the average daily maximum runs from 30.0 C in January to 33.0 C in September, a spread of three degrees. December's 30.3 C maximum and 25.0 C minimum put it among the coolest and most comfortable months of the year, which is a large part of why the island is busiest now.
Sea temperature is warm and stable. The Meteorological Department gives an annual average of about 27 C, coldest around February and March at roughly 25.9 C and warmest around September and October at about 28.2 C. It does not publish a December-specific figure that we could find, and we are not going to invent one; December sits on the cooling side of the October peak, and in practice nobody on this island hesitates about getting in.
Wind is the underrated December factor. The normals give an average of 11.2 knots from due east, which is up on the calm autumn months of October and November. Trade wind on a hot island is a gift on land, and it is why Curacao rarely feels as heavy as its humidity figure suggests. It also means a sun hat that stays on and an umbrella that does not.
Is the sea rougher, and which beaches stay calm?
Partly, and the geography answers it better than a forecast can.
Curacao's leeward south and southwest coast is the sheltered side. The Meteorological Department's marine guidance notes that the highest waves are north of the island, with swell activity along the northern and western shores. That is a year-round structural fact rather than a December one, and we could not find an official statement putting a seasonal window on it, so we will not pretend to a precision nobody has published.
What that means practically: the beach clubs on the south and east side, Jan Thiel and the Mambo strip, are the reliable calm-water option in any conditions, and they are also where the island puts its loungers and lunch. The west-coast coves are still on the leeward side and are usually fine, but they sit further round toward the exposed shore, so an off day is more likely there than at Jan Thiel. The north coast, at Shete Boka, is where the swell lands on purpose, which is the entire reason to visit it.

Hurricanes: the honest version
December sits at the very end of the Atlantic hurricane season, which the Meteorological Department dates from 1 June to 30 November, with activity peaking August to October. So a December trip is, by the calendar, past it.
The longer-term picture is better still, and it is worth stating precisely rather than as a slogan. The department's own record covers 1605 through 2024 and counts 37 or more tropical cyclones passing within 100 nautical miles of Curacao, roughly once every 11 years, and states that no hurricane or tropical storm has ever made direct landfall on the island. That is not the same as "no hurricanes ever": Tropical Storm Bonnie in June 2022 brought warnings, school closures and 3 to 5 inches of rain. What December costs, and what we will not tell you
December is Curacao's peak. The Curacao Tourist Board recorded 80,891 stayover visitors in December 2025, which it described as the highest monthly total ever recorded on the island and a 10 percent increase on December 2024. The Netherlands sent 26,243 of them, staying an average of 13.7 nights; the United States sent 20,423, staying an average of 6.5 nights.
That is the demand you are booking into, and it is why the Christmas and New Year window goes first. Practically, if you want a specific property for the week between Christmas and New Year, you are competing with a Dutch market that books long stays early.

What is actually open, and what the island does
Curacao's statutory holidays are fixed in the Arbeidsregeling Curacao and published by the government's digital desk. Both Christmas days are official: 25 and 26 December, two full days. New Year's Day is a full day. New Year's Eve, 31 December, appears on the same list as a partial day off measured in hours rather than a full day, which is why Willemstad empties out through that afternoon. The statutory table also carries Koninkrijksdag on 15 December, though the government's own year calendars do not always show it, so treat that one as a day to confirm rather than plan around.
Expect banks, government offices and many shops to close on the 25th and 26th and on 1 January. Restaurants and beach clubs largely keep working through the season, because this is their busiest fortnight of the year, but holiday hours are a per-business question rather than an island-wide rule. If a specific dinner matters, reserve it and confirm the date.
Bon Pasku: the part worth planning around
Curacao's December is genuinely its own thing, not an imported one.
The food comes first. The Curacao Tourist Board points visitors at ayaka, meat-filled parcels of cornmeal dough wrapped in banana leaves, alongside keshi yena, the island's stuffed-cheese dish, and bolo di kashupete, a cashew nut cake. Ham di Pasku, the Christmas ham, and the Venezuelan-descended ham bread pan di jamon round out a table that is Caribbean, Dutch and South American at once. Then there is the pagara. These are long chains of firecrackers laid out along a street or around a building and lit, traditionally to drive out bad spirits before the new year. The tourism board's own holiday article puts the biggest one on the map for visitors: "The biggest firecracker event will take place in the Pietermaai neighborhood on December 31st starting in the early afternoon."

So, is December a good time to go?
Yes, with two honest caveats. It is the island's most expensive and busiest month, and it carries a real if modest chance of a wet morning: 9.8 rain days on the long-term average, most of the rain arriving overnight, and a strengthening El Nino that on the island's own climatology tends to suppress exactly this part of the year.
What you get in return is the year's most comfortable heat, eight and a quarter hours of daily sunshine, steady trade wind, a sea nobody hesitates to swim in, the hurricane season behind you, and a holiday fortnight with a culture of its own. If you can travel in the first half of the month you dodge the worst of the pricing and keep all of the weather.
