7 days in Curacao, the way we'd do it

Seven days is the sweet spot for Curacao. Three days covers Willemstad and one beach at a sprint, five is comfortable, but a full week lets you add the west end, a real dive or snorkel day, and the one trip everyone asks about, Klein Curacao, without rushing any of it. This is not a list of everything the island has. It is the order we would actually do it in, with real 2026 prices and the bookings that matter.
Where you sleep
Pietermaai and downtown Willemstad put history, restaurants and nightlife at your door and suit a Dutch-colonial-city trip. Jan Thiel and Piscadera Bay put you closer to the beach clubs and resort pools. For a first visit, either works, just know which trip you are optimizing for.
Where to eat, area by areaWheels or no wheels
You do not need a car for a Willemstad-only trip. You do need one, or a booked tour, for the west end, Christoffel National Park, and most beaches beyond Mambo Beach. Renting for 3 to 4 days in the middle of the week covers it without paying for a car you are not using on arrival and departure days.
The honest car-rental callOne piece of paperwork first: every visitor needs the free Digital Immigration (DI) Card, completed online within 7 days of departure at the official government portal, dicardcuracao.com. It is mandatory and free; ignore any third-party site charging a fee for it.
Arrival

Do not overplan arrival day. The easiest first evening is the boardwalk closest to town.
Most international flights land at Hato International Airport (CUR) in the afternoon. Complete the free Digital Immigration Card online before you fly, not at the airport, it is required for every foreign visitor. Once you have your rental car or taxi sorted, the simplest first stop is Mambo Beach Boulevard, the free boardwalk closest to downtown Willemstad, lined with restaurants and bars even if you skip the paid beach itself.
Keep dinner easy and close to your hotel tonight. If you are staying in Pietermaai, Mundo Bizarro is a good low-key first-night option with real food and a livelier bar scene if you want it.
The city
Willemstad on foot: Punda, Otrobanda, and the floating bridge
The UNESCO-listed heart of the island, best covered with a local guide before the heat sets in.
Willemstad's two historic downtown districts, Punda and Otrobanda, sit on either side of the harbor mouth, connected by the Queen Emma pontoon bridge. A guided walking tour in the morning covers the pastel Handelskade waterfront, backstreet history, and the street art that has spread through Otrobanda, with water included for the heat.
For lunch, Plasa Bieu in Punda is the old market food hall where local cooks serve the same plates islanders grow up on, goat stew, fried snapper, funchi, at local prices. In the afternoon, a short stop at the Curacao Liqueur Distillery (Landhuis Chobolobo) shows how the island's famous blue liqueur is actually made, with a tasting included.
The west end
Grote Knip, Cas Abao, and the beaches everyone photographs
The postcard beaches sit 45 minutes to an hour from Willemstad. Go early.
Grote Knip (Playa Kenepa Grandi) is the cliff-backed white-sand beach that shows up in most Curacao photography, free to enter but worth arriving before mid-morning, both for calmer water and because the parking area gets genuinely chaotic once tour coaches start arriving. Its smaller neighbor Kleine Knip is a quieter alternative if the crowd puts you off.
If you would rather have the day's logistics handled, a guided west-end beach-hopping tour covers Grote Knip, Cas Abao, and Playa Piskado in one day with a stop at Shete Boka National Park. On your own, pair Grote Knip with Cas Abao's paid, full-facility beach (about $6-7 per carload) for the easier snorkeling of the two. For dinner, Jaanchie's in Westpunt is the island's longest-running local institution, lunch-only some days, so check hours before you drive out.
Under the water
Turtles at Playa Piskado, then a shore dive or snorkel at Playa Kalki
The day for Curacao's real strength: wild sea turtles and some of the best shore diving in the Caribbean.
Start at Playa Piskado, a small fishing-pier cove near Westpunt where wild green sea turtles reliably swim close to snorkelers, free to enter, with a chair rental if you want one. Keep a respectful distance, these are wild animals, not a managed attraction.
From there, Playa Kalki (known by its dive-site name, Alice in Wonderland) is widely considered the island's best shore snorkel and dive site, a reef wall that starts close to shore. A $5 facility fee covers a lift for gear and shower access. If you have never dived, a Discover Scuba session here needs no certification and includes a private instructor.
The big one
Klein Curacao: the full-day boat trip everyone asks about
A flat, uninhabited island 15 miles offshore, with the longest beach in the Curacao area. Boat-only, full day.
There is no way to reach Klein Curacao independently, every visit is a boat trip, and most run close to nine hours including a two-to-three-hour crossing each way. What you get for the commitment: a 19th-century lighthouse, a shipwreck visible just offshore, and a stretch of white sand longer than anything on the Curacao mainland, with almost nobody on it away from your own boat's landing spot.
Pick your operator by comfort level: a standard catamaran trip with an open bar and BBQ lunch covers the essentials, while a few operators run larger yachts with private beach-house access on the island for a smoother, more shaded day. Either way, this is a full-commitment day, plan nothing else for the 5th day of your trip.
The rugged day
Christoffel National Park and the wave-battered north coast
Cactus scrubland, old plantation history, and a coastline that looks nothing like the calm west-side beaches.
Christoffel National Park is Curacao's largest protected area, built around the island's highest point, with old landhuis plantation history and native wildlife including the Curacao white-tailed deer. A small-group jeep safari covers ground a rental sedan should not attempt, and if the hike to the summit interests you specifically, confirm with the operator whether it is included.
Pair the park with Shete Boka National Park nearby, where Atlantic swell explodes into a series of limestone inlets on the island's rugged north coast, a sharp contrast to the calm leeward beaches you have spent most of the week on.
Farewell

Fly out late if you can, and spend the last hours where the island's liveliest beach scene is.
Most international flights leave Hato International in the afternoon or evening, so a morning at Jan Thiel is realistic before heading to the airport. It is Curacao's busiest beach-club scene, small per-person entry at the clubs (about $3.50, parking included), music, restaurants, and watersports rather than a quiet last swim, which suits most people fine as a send-off.
For a last real meal, Mar y Tierra 91 in Punda or Fort Nassau's hilltop harbor view are the two big-deal dinner options on the island, both worth booking ahead rather than walking up.

Is 7 days too long for Curacao?
No. Seven days covers Willemstad properly, a west-end beach day, a real dive or snorkel day, the full-day Klein Curacao trip, and Christoffel National Park, without stacking more than one big outing per day. Three days covers only Willemstad and one beach at a sprint.
Do you need a car for a week in Curacao?
Not for a Willemstad-only trip, but yes for most of this itinerary. We recommend renting for 3 to 4 days in the middle of the week to cover the west-end beaches and Christoffel National Park; taxis run on fixed government zone rates, and Klein Curacao is boat-only regardless.
What should you book in advance for a Curacao trip?
The Klein Curacao day trip is the one to lock in first, it is the island's single most in-demand excursion. After that, a Discover Scuba dive or guided turtle snorkel if you want a specific morning, and any big dinner reservation like Mar y Tierra 91 or Fort Nassau.
How much does a week in Curacao cost per person?

Can you visit Klein Curacao without a boat tour?
No. Klein Curacao is an uninhabited island about 15 miles offshore with no ferry or independent access, every visit is a full-day boat trip, typically around nine hours including the crossing.
