Avila Beach Hotel is the property people ask us about most once they work out that Willemstad, for all its colour, is not really a beach base. Avila is the exception. It is also the property travellers most often get wrong, usually because somewhere in their research they picked up that it is adults only. It is not, and that belongs near the top rather than buried.
One thing plainly, first: this is our local team's assessment, not a write-up of a night we spent here. It is built from Avila's own published material, the Curacao Tourist Board's listing for the property, trade coverage of the island's hotel investments, and the patterns that repeat across guest reviews. We will tell you which of those a claim comes from, and we are not going to describe a room we did not sleep in.
The short answer
Avila Beach Hotel is a 131-room historic hotel on Penstraat, on the Pietermaai side of Willemstad, built around a governor's residence dating to roughly 1780 and open as a hotel since 1949. It is the oldest hotel still in operation on Curacao. It has two small private beaches protected by offshore breakwaters, which makes it the rare hotel in the capital with actual sand rather than a rock ledge. It is not adults only and it is not all-inclusive. If you want to walk to dinner and still swim before breakfast, it is the strongest match on the island. If you want a resort strip, a children-free property, or the island's best beaches on your doorstep, it is the wrong pick.

Is Avila Beach Hotel adults only? The honest answer
No. Avila Beach Hotel is not an adults-only hotel. One of its room categories is adults only, and that is where the confusion comes from.
On Avila's own accommodations pages, the Oceanfront Blues rooms carry the restriction directly: "Maximum Occupancy Is 2 Adults (Adults Only!)". Third-party listings describe the same thing as the adults-only Caribbean Oceanfront Blues wing, an all-wood structure built on a pier off the hotel's private beach. So the wing is genuinely 18 and over.
The hotel as a whole is a different story, and again the evidence is the hotel's own site. Avila runs a dedicated Curacao family vacation page marketing the property for family holidays, a room filter for travelling with your family with kids, and E Mucha interactive workshops aimed at children with parallel sessions for parents. Babysitting is listed among the services. The Curacao Tourist Board's own listing for Avila's beaches points out that the breakwaters make the water "especially ideal for small children to float in".
So the accurate sentence, the one to carry into your booking: Avila Beach Hotel is adults only by room category and family-friendly as a hotel. If your requirement is a room with no children next door, book Oceanfront Blues. If your requirement is a property where no children are present at all, Avila cannot give you that. What Avila Beach Hotel actually is
The building at the centre of it all is called La Belle Alliance, put up around 1780 as a country residence for English and later Dutch governors. It is now the main entrance and lobby, in use rather than roped off. The hotel itself opened on February 1, 1949, with, by its own account, only 18 beds. The private beach came in 1959, which is when Hotel Avila became the Avila Beach Hotel. It marked 75 years in 2024, and ownership of the family-run property passed to the Dutch Vogels family in 2015 after founder Nic Moller died.
That timeline explains the single most useful thing to understand before you book, which is that the rooms sit in three wings from three different eras, in three different styles:
- La Belle Alliance (1992), the classic wing. Deluxe and oceanfront rooms with balconies in Dutch-Caribbean style, plus the beachfront apartments added in 2020. Trade coverage of the island's 2024 to 2025 hotel investments credits Avila with renovating its oceanfront rooms, reported to be in this wing.
- Oceanfront Blues (1995), the Caribbean wing. The all-wood block on the pier. Adults only, closest to the water, and the reason people call Avila romantic.
- Octagon (2007), the contemporary wing. The newest and largest block of standard, deluxe and preferred rooms, and the wing the infinity pool sits beside.
Independent listings agree on 131 rooms, plus beachfront apartments whose count differs between sources, so we leave that number out.
On site there are two restaurants and a cluster of bars: The Pen Restaurant and Terrace on the beach, doing breakfast through dinner; Blues, at the end of the pier over the water, open five days a week for dinner with live music on Thursdays; and the Schooner Bar, open-air on the sand, which the hotel describes as the oldest beach bar on Curacao. The beach, and why it is unusual here
This is Avila's real, defensible advantage, and it is worth being specific about why.
Willemstad is not a beach town. Our where to stay guide is blunt about it: base yourself in the historic city and the island's good swimming is a 15 to 30 minute drive away. The coastline through Pietermaai and around the capital is largely rock rather than sand, which is why the district's other oceanfront hotels are oceanfront rather than beachfront. They give you water access by staircase into a small cove, a compact city beach, or a pool facing the sea. Good, but not sand.
Avila has sand, and it has it twice. The Curacao Tourist Board's listing describes two private beaches, both sheltered from wind and waves by offshore breakwaters, with palm shade, parasols and palapas, and a house reef good enough to snorkel straight off the beach. Avila's own site leads with the same point, "Not one but two private beaches", and its TripAdvisor property description says the same. The practical effect of the breakwaters is calm water on days when other parts of the island are choppy, which matters if you are travelling with young children or nervous swimmers.
The honest limit: these are hotel coves, not Curacao's great beaches. They are small, and they are for guests. Nobody staying here should skip the drive out west. Who it is for, and who should pick something else
Book Avila if your trip is built around Willemstad rather than a lounger. Pietermaai's restaurant and bar strip is roughly a 10 minute walk, Willemstad's landmark waterfront around 20 minutes on foot, and a free hotel shuttle runs to the city centre twice each weekday morning and afternoon. Pick something else if any of the following is your actual requirement:
- A genuinely adults-only property. Only two hotels on Curacao enforce it: Sandals Royal Curacao (18 and over, all-inclusive) and Art Hotel Curacao, the 30-room adults-only boutique that opened in Pietermaai in 2025. Others market an adult mood without the rule. The honest caveats
It is an older hotel, and the wings are not equivalent. The recurring theme across guest reviews is historic character mentioned in the same breath as the property's age, with room quality varying by wing. That is exactly what a 1992, 1995 and 2007 build history predicts. Treat the wing as the decision, and ask which one you are booked into rather than booking on photographs.
Live music at Blues is Thursdays. If a jazz night over the water is part of the reason you are booking, build the week around a Thursday. Blues is also closed two days a week.
The beaches are calm, not big. Sheltered water is a feature, not a compromise, but it also means no surf and a compact footprint shared with other guests.
Cruise ships dock nearby. The tourist board places Avila near the mega pier, so on heavy port days the walk into Punda is a busier one.
It is a city hotel with a beach, not a resort. No casino, no water park, no swim-up bar culture, and no constant programming for children.
The bottom line
Avila earns its place on any honest Curacao shortlist for one reason: it is the only realistic way to sleep on sand and still walk to a UNESCO-listed waterfront. The history is genuine rather than themed, and the adults-only rumour that follows the hotel around is a misreading of one room category.
Go in with the right expectations, an older family-run hotel with three distinct wings rather than a polished resort, and it is hard to beat for a culture-led week.
