The worry behind an April Curacao search is usually the calendar: spring break, Easter, or both, and the fear the island will be packed and pricey all month. Our local team builds every month guide from the Meteorological Department's Hato normals and the Tourist Board's stayover counts, and in 2027 those records and the church calendar do not line up the way most planners expect. Easter Sunday is 28 March. The month you are actually booking is the dry last stretch of high season, with King's Day and the Dutch May holiday stacked at the end of it.
Here is what April is actually like, from those records rather than a regional cliche, along with the honest trade-offs. For the full twelve-month view our best time to visit guide runs every month, and the neighbouring high-season month has its own write-up in our March guide.
The April numbers, and the one sky caveat
| April averages (Hato, 1991 to 2020) | Figure |
|---|---|
| Average high | 31.4 C (88.5 F) |
| Average low | 25.7 C (78.3 F) |
| Rainfall | 15.8 mm |
| Days with 1.0 mm or more | 2.1 |
| Hours with rainfall | 10.8 |
| Sunshine | 257.4 hours |
| Cloud cover | 52.4 percent |
| Wind at the airport | 11.8 knots, an easterly |
Two lines do the work. Rainfall of 15.8 millimetres, across 2.1 days and only 10.8 hours in the whole month, puts April inside the driest run of a year that totals 570 millimetres. On the same official table March is 17.6 millimetres and May is 15.3, so April is a hair drier than March and a hair wetter than May. Other published climate records put April nearer 20 millimetres over about two days. The spread is real and too small to change a packing list. This is a dry month.
The caveat is the sky, not the rain gauge. The same normals put average cloud cover at 52.4 percent in April against 44.3 percent in March, and sunshine at 257.4 hours against March's 273.2. You still get long bright days. You do not get March's hardest blue every afternoon. Treat April as brilliantly usable, with a slightly softer sky than the month before it.

Why April stays dry
Curacao sits in the Southern Caribbean Dry Zone and is classified semi-arid, which is why the west end is cactus and thorn scrub rather than rainforest. The Meteorological Department's climate page puts the dry season from February through May. April sits in the middle of that run. November, at 141.0 millimetres, is the wet month. December, at 86.4, is still inside the wetter stretch. A Caribbean calendar that files April under "rainy season, think twice" has simply never looked at Hato.
When rain does come, it follows the island's usual rule, which the department states plainly. Because of the sea and land breeze, most precipitation is suppressed during the day and tends to fall late at night or early in the morning, usually as a short shower that passes. In April you are barely packing for it. Our packing list has the specifics: sun, a light layer, and shoes that can handle limestone.
The sea and the wind
The sea in April is about 27 C (80.6 F). That figure is the reading published climate series give for the month, and it matches the Meteorological Department's own annual picture: an average near 27 C, coldest around February and March at about 25.9 C, warmest in September and October at about 28.2 C. A late-winter swim is the coolest of the year. An April swim is a step up from that low and still short of the autumn peak. It is comfortable for a long snorkel. It is not bathwater.
The wind is the other half of the comfort. April averages 11.8 knots at the airport, an easterly, essentially the same breeze as March's 11.9 knots and short of the stronger May and June readings on the same table. On a 31 C island that breeze is a gift. It takes the edge off the afternoon, keeps a wet road dry by breakfast, and is the reason a shaded lunch beats a noon hike. It is also the reason the open water outside a cove can show whitecaps while the cove itself stays swimmable.
That combination, dry air and warm-enough water, is why April is a strong month for the island's real signature, which is shore diving and easy shore-entry snorkelling. The honest limit is the breeze: a windy afternoon can lift a little chop into the more open west-coast coves, so mornings are the calmer bet there.

Which beaches stay calm in a breezy April
Curacao's sheltered swimming water is on the leeward south and southwest coast all year. The department's marine guidance puts the highest waves on the northern and western shores, which is geography, not an April special. In practice the beach clubs at Jan Thiel and along the Mambo strip are the reliable calm-water choice when the trade is up. The west-coast coves, Grote Knip, Cas Abao and Porto Mari, are still on the sheltered side and are usually fine. A breezy April afternoon can put more chop into them than a still autumn day would.
Each of those has one real limit.
Grote Knip is free, and it is the photograph everyone wants. The sand is down a cliff path and a set of steps, which is a problem for anyone who cannot manage them, and the parking area gets genuinely chaotic in peak hours because this is the west end's most visited beach.
Cas Abao is the easier swim: a wide developed beach with a fringing reef and full facilities. It charges for entry, and it is a regular coach stop, so the calm water comes with a midday crowd. Go early if you want the reef to yourself.
The north coast at Shete Boka takes the swell on purpose. It is dramatic to watch and it is not a swimming beach. Our Shete Boka guide covers the park, and the beaches hub sorts the shelter question beach by beach.
The friction on a west-end day in peak April is the drive and the parking, not the weather. From Willemstad the best coves are a long haul on the west road, and the famous lots fill. If you would rather not self-navigate that coast, the west-end beach hopping tour covers Playa Piskado, the Kenepa beaches and Cas Abao, plus a Shete Boka stop and a flamingo sanctuary, in one coach day of about seven hours, with no rental car required. The honest limit is the schedule. It covers a lot of ground and leaves little time to linger at any one beach. If a slow afternoon at a single cove is the point, a car still wins, and our car rental guide is the practical page for that.
A boat day such as Klein Curacao is governed by sea state, not by the tiny April rain total. Book it early in the stay so a breezy morning can move to another day.
Hurricanes: April sits outside the season
April has a clean hurricane answer. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, which is the window the National Hurricane Center and NOAA's hurricane research division both use. An April trip is not at the edge of that window. It is more than a month before the season opens, and the peak of the season, late August into October, is half a year away.
Curacao also sits near 12 degrees north, outside the main hurricane belt. "Outside the belt" is the accurate phrase. It is not a claim that the island has never seen a passing storm, and it is not a reason to skip insurance. Our hurricane risk page holds the long record. For an April decision, the calendar is the short version: the season has not started.

Browse the latest Curaçao storiesCrowds: the last peak month, and the two weeks that actually fill
April is still high season. The Curacao Tourist Board recorded 68,188 stayover visitors in April 2025, up 18 percent on the year before, which is 10,438 more stayovers than April 2024. The board's own release calls it the last month of the peak season. March 2025, the month beside it, was 72,474. April is busy. It is a step down from March, and it is the close of the December to April run rather than a new surge.
Who was here matters more than the total. The Netherlands sent 22,154 people, almost flat on April 2024's 22,198, staying an average of 11.4 nights, with 59 percent in non-resort places. The United States sent 18,004, up 26 percent from 14,303, staying 5.9 nights, with 68 percent in resorts. Canada sent 3,893. The island-wide average stay was 8.1 nights. The American stay is the short resort stay, and that number grew. The Dutch stay is the long one, and it barely moved. Our where to stay guide is built around that split.
The 2027 calendar splits the month in a way the 2025 total cannot show, because the tourist board publishes months, not weeks. We will not invent a week-by-week rate table. What the calendar does show is two family-holiday stacks with a quieter-looking gap between them.
Easter 2027 is the early one, and it is not in April. The Dutch government and Curacao's holiday calendar both put Easter Sunday on 28 March and Easter Monday on 29 March. Good Friday is 26 March. If you wanted the Easter weekend on the island in 2027, you wanted late March.
The April stack is the other end of the month. King's Day, Koningsdag, is a fixed public holiday on 27 April. In 2027 that is a Tuesday. The Dutch May holiday, meivakantie, runs from 24 April through 2 May 2027 in all three school regions, so King's Day sits inside it. Schools may add the ministry's advice week of 1 May through 9 May, and a given school can deviate, so treat 24 April to 2 May as the baseline wave rather than a guarantee that every Dutch family is off on those exact days. There is no single United States spring-break week. Many districts break in March, which in 2027 also holds Easter, and April still drew those 18,004 American stayovers in 2025 without one national date.
No one publishes a verified April-only nightly rate, so we will not invent one. Compare live quotes for your dates. Curacao's currency is the Caribbean guilder (XCG), pegged at 1 US dollar to 1.79 guilders. It has been the sole legal tender since 1 July 2025, when the old Netherlands Antillean guilder was withdrawn, and US dollars are widely accepted. Our currency guide has the practical detail, and our vacation cost breakdown has the budget tiers.
The honest reading for 2027: the first three weeks of April sit after Easter and before the May holiday. The last week of April is the one to reserve first if your dates touch King's Day or a Dutch family is travelling. That is a calendar fact, not a promise that the middle of the month is cheap.
What is actually on in April
April's own holiday is King's Day. Curacao's official holiday list fixes Koningsdag on 27 April. Workers have the day off, and students do not go to school. We did not find a published 2027 visitor programme for it: no ticketed show, no announced route, no start time. Plan it as a public holiday the island marks, not as a festival you buy a ticket for. The practical limit is the closure itself. A bank errand or a government office will not happen on the 27th. Do that on another day.
The harvest parade is the event people often place in April, and in 2027 it is not there. Seú, the Seu harvest festival, is an annual folklore parade held on Easter Monday. The tourist board's listing for 2026 put it on 6 April, which was Easter Monday that year: a 10:00 start at Tesoro Plaza on Franklin D. Rooseveltweg in Santa Maria, ending at the Aqualectra building in Mundu Nobo, with over 3,000 people in traditional dress. In 2027 Easter Monday is 29 March. We did not find a 2027 listing with a route or a start time, so the date we will stand behind is the tradition, not a published call time. If the parade is the reason for the trip, aim at late March and confirm the listing closer to the date. An April 2027 week misses it.
Two other famous names are easy to misfile. Carnival on Curacao runs up to Lent. Ash Wednesday 2027 is 10 February, so the parades are a February event. Our carnival guide says exactly what is confirmed and what the organisers have not published. Curacao North Sea Jazz is a September festival. The published 2026 edition is 3 to 5 September at the World Trade Center in Piscadera Bay. It is not an April event, and we are not going to guess a 2027 weekend that has not been announced. For anything with a confirmed date inside your exact window, our what is on now page tracks the events we can source.

Getting around, and where to base yourself
None of the weather changes the rule that governs every Curacao trip. You will want a rental car unless a single coach day is doing the west end for you. The beaches, both national parks and the quiet coves are spread along a long coast, well past walking distance of any one hotel zone, and in peak-season April the cars go with the rooms. Our car rental guide covers pickup and insurance.
Where you sleep changes how much you drive. The west side versus east side guide and the where to stay guide walk through that choice. A 7-day itinerary and a 5-day itinerary show how the days fit. When you are ready to line the pieces up, the booking hub and the activities page are where the stays, the car and the tours sit.
So, is April a good time to visit Curacao?
Yes, with three honest caveats. It is still peak season, so it is busy and it is not a bargain month, and the last week of April 2027 carries King's Day inside the Dutch May holiday. The sea is about 27 C, comfortable and a step up from the February to March low, and it is not the warmest water of the year. And the sky is a little cloudier than March, even though the rain is a rounding error: 15.8 millimetres, 2.1 days, 10.8 hours.
What you get is the dry season at its most straightforward. Hot days, a steady easterly, sheltered coves on the south and southwest coasts, and a hurricane season that has not opened. In 2027, do not book April because you want Easter or the harvest parade. Those fall on 28 and 29 March. Book April because you want the dry last month of high season, and if your dates include 24 April to 2 May, reserve that week before you reserve the rest.
