Sandals Royal Curacao is the most searched hotel on this island by a wide margin, and most of what gets written about it is brochure copy or someone's honeymoon recap. Here is something more useful: an informed local read on who this resort actually suits, and who would have a better week elsewhere.

What follows is built from the resort's published inclusions, the property's documented history, independent visitor reporting, and our knowledge of this corner of the island.
The short answer
Sandals Royal Curacao is worth it for adults-only couples who want a genuinely hands-off all-inclusive week and are content to spend most of that week on property. It is a large, modern, well-equipped resort with a real beachfront position and a design that keeps you inside it, which is the whole idea, executed at scale.
It is the wrong choice if seeing Curacao is the point of the trip. The resort sits southeast of Willemstad in the Santa Barbara Estate, away from both the historic capital and the famous west-end beaches, and Curacao is an island where the payoff comes from getting out and driving. That tension is the most useful thing to understand before you book.

What Sandals Royal Curacao actually is
It is adults-only and all-inclusive, with a minimum check-in age of 18, and Sandals positions it specifically for couples rather than adults generally. That distinction matters: "adults-only" and "couples-focused" are not the same promise, and this property leans hard into the second, from the wedding and honeymoon business to the two-person cabanas.
The scale is roughly 350 rooms and suites across about 24 categories, which is a lot of tiers to parse. The ladder runs from garden-view rooms up through swim-up butler suites, the Kurason Island Suites around a heart-shaped pool, the Awa seaside bungalows with their own infinity pools, and the Rondoval butler villas with private pools. The top buys a standalone bungalow and butler service; the bottom buys a comfortable room at a large resort.
On food and drink, Sandals publishes 8 specialty restaurants, 3 food trucks, and 13 bars including a swim-up bar, with top-shelf spirits, stocked in-room minibars, and Robert Mondavi Twin Oaks wines included. You will see "12 restaurants" on some booking sites; the resort's own inclusions list says 8 plus 3 food trucks, which is what we would plan around.
Included activities, again per the resort: PADI-certified scuba diving for certified divers, snorkeling with equipment, kayaks, Hobie Cats, paddleboarding, land sports from beach volleyball to pickleball, a fitness center, day and night entertainment, and Dutch bikes to get around the property. Taxes, gratuities, round-trip airport transfers, and wi-fi are included for every room category.
What is not included, despite the assumption: golf on the estate carries an additional fee, and the Island Routes excursions, Red Lane spa treatments, and private cabanas are all paid add-ons.
One perk directly addresses the criticism in this review. The Island Inclusive program gives qualifying guests a $250 dine-out credit at six curated local restaurants off property, transfers included. It applies to seven or more paid nights in a butler suite, or in any category for Diamond-level and above loyalty members. Select butler bungalows also get use of a MINI Cooper, though it is explicitly not used for airport transfers, and independent reviewers call that perk better on paper than in practice.
While we are correcting expectations: the Rolls-Royce and Mercedes-Benz airport transfers that circulate in Sandals discussions are documented by the brand for top-tier suites at Sandals Royal Barbados, and otherwise offered at select resorts or for an extra charge. Curacao is not named. Every room category here gets a standard complimentary transfer, just not that one.
Wait, what happened to the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort?
This is the most common point of confusion about the property, worth answering directly because people are still searching for a hotel that no longer exists.
The Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort is gone as a brand. Sandals bought it, renovated it, and reopened it as Sandals Royal Curacao in April 2022, its first and only resort on the island. The site has a longer history than the Sandals name suggests: it opened as the Hyatt Regency Curacao in 2010, then ran as the Santa Barbara Beach and Golf Resort before the Sandals purchase.
So if you have a memory of Santa Barbara, or an old recommendation for it, you are thinking of the same site and the same bay. What changed is not cosmetic: Santa Barbara was a family resort, and Sandals Royal Curacao is adults-only. The golf course question
Worth being precise here, because the old resort had golf in its name and the assumption carries over.
The golf course survived the rebrand, but it is not part of the all-inclusive and it is not run by Sandals. Old Quarry Golf Course, an 18-hole Pete Dye championship layout inside the Santa Barbara Estate, still operates as its own business with its own tee-time booking, dress code, and restaurant. Sandals' guidance is that guests can play on the estate at an additional fee.
That is a good outcome for golfers: a well-regarded course sits a short distance from your room, and Old Quarry claims recent Caribbean course awards on its own site. Just budget it as a paid round and book the tee time yourself.
The location, honestly
The resort sits at the mouth of the Spanish Water bay in the Santa Barbara Estate, near Nieuwpoort, southeast of Willemstad. Its west-facing aspect over the water is a genuine asset, and the sunsets from this position are as good as the marketing suggests. That part is real.
The distances are where you need clear eyes. Sandals lists the resort as a 16 mile (26 km) drive from the airport, though independent visitors report 30 to 45 minutes in practice depending on traffic. Willemstad's historic core is roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The west-end beaches most people picture when they picture Curacao, Grote Knip, Playa Kalki, Cas Abao, are closer to an hour or more each way.
That geography produces the real trade-off. Sandals is designed, deliberately and skillfully, to keep you on property. Curacao's payoff, unlike a small island with one hotel strip, comes from covering ground: the UNESCO-listed capital, the west-end coves, the shore-entry dive sites, Christoffel National Park. An all-inclusive week here means seeing less of the island than a Willemstad, Pietermaai, or Jan Thiel base would, because every excursion is a paid add-on or a long drive rather than a walk out the door.

Who it is for, and who should pick something else
It is for you if: you are a couple who wants an adults-only week with no decisions and no bills; you want a wedding or honeymoon handled end to end; you are a certified diver drawn to included dives; or you want a resort large enough that the variety comes from the property itself.
Pick something else if you want a quiet, small, boutique stay, but be careful here, because Curacao's adults-only field is thinner than the booking sites suggest. Sandals and the 30-room Art Hotel Curacao in Pietermaai are the island's only two genuinely, enforceably adults-only properties. The honest caveats
The beach is two beaches, and only one is for swimming. Independent visitors describe a rocky, ocean-facing stretch holding the beach bar, cabanas, and beachfront dining but not really for getting in the water, plus a sheltered sandy beach on the channel into Spanish Water with floating platforms. The resort notes that swimming beach is protected by a floating pier, with water around 30 feet deep there and good snorkeling around the pilings. If your mental image is a wide, wade-in sand beach, adjust it.
The bay is working water. Boat traffic moves in and out of Spanish Water, which limits where the resort's small craft can go. Sheltered, yes. Empty, no.
It is a big, spread-out property. Included bikes to "explore the resort" are a tell, and guests commonly note the walk between rooms, restaurants, and the food trucks. If mobility or long walks in heat matter to you, ask about room location before you book.
The room tiering does real work here. Across roughly 24 categories, features people assume are standard, private pools, soaking tubs, butler service, the MINI, the dine-out credit, sit at specific levels. Read what your exact category includes.
And it is still a young resort. Reviews from its first seasons commonly note opening-period growing pains alongside praise for the design, the Dos Awa two-level infinity pool, and the staff. Feedback trends warmer now, so check the date on any review before you weigh it.

Sandals Royal Curacao does what it sets out to do well. It is the island's flagship adults-only all-inclusive, one of only five all-inclusive resorts on Curacao and one of only two genuinely adults-only properties, and for a couple who wants a week where nothing needs organizing, it is a straightforward yes.
Our reservation is not about quality. It is that Curacao is one of the Caribbean's better islands to explore, and this hotel is built to keep you comfortably still. If you book it, use the dine-out credit if you qualify, rent a car for at least two days, and treat the resort as a base rather than the whole trip.
